If You Reside in These States, There is a Fourth Stimulus Check Happening

Every time a stimulus check appears, it seems like someone asks, “So… will there be another stimulus?” after a five-second wait. (Reminder: March 2021 marked the mailing of the third stimulus check). For those who have been pondering whether a fourth stimulus will materialize, we have the answer: sort of. A fourth stimulus check is being given out, but only to residents of specific US states.

Do 4th Stimulus Checks Occur?

They are, but unlike the previous three stimulus checks, they are not coming from the federal government. This time, everything is based on the state in which you reside. Yes, certain state and local officials are receiving these fourth stimulus checks.

All 50 states received $195 billion ($500 million at minimum for each state) when the American Rescue Plan was implemented to aid in financing their local economic recovery.1. That’s a big sum of money. The catch is that they are not obligated to spend that money indefinitely. By the end of 2024, the states must decide how they will use the funds, and they will have until the end of 2026 to do so.2. Although those deadlines seem very far off, time is of the essence in this situation.

Which States Are Offering Checks for a Fourth Stimulus?

The catch is that all 50 states are eligible to receive this funding; however, they must first decide how to use it. These states are the ones who have developed a strategy to use the funds as a fourth stimulus check thus far.

Fourth Stimulus Checks Are Distributed to Selected Groups

Certain states are using the government-given wad of cash to distribute stimulus checks to particular demographic groups. Each state has its requirements, but they all seem to have a few things in common, such as meeting specific income thresholds or experiencing some hardship.

Arizona

When it comes to stimulus checks, the Grand Canyon State sees things differently; they are giving them to people who are returning to the workforce. The Back to Work Program in Arizona pays $2,000 to people who find employment after being unemployed.3. However, before receiving the benefit, you must hold down your new job for at least eight weeks.

California

California is the only state on the list that has distributed large, broadly based stimulus checks that resemble those issued by the federal government. This is the breakdown of their numbers: As part of the Golden State Stimulus I, Californians earning $75,000 or less received a one-time check for $600 or $1,200.

Additionally, they might qualify for a second stimulus payment ranging from $500 to $1,100 under the Golden State Stimulus II.5. This is in addition to the additional funds the state gave parents of children under the age of six through the Young Child Tax Credit.

Colorado

These guys decided to refocus their efforts on providing stimulus checks to the jobless. Those who had received at least one unemployment check payment between March 15, 2020, and October 24, 2020, received $375 from them.

Maine

Maine, located in the northeastern region of the nation, is providing “disaster relief” funds. We are sending these $285 checks as a token of appreciation to people who worked during the pandemic.

Furthermore, to counteract the effects of inflation, Maine announced in April 2022 that it will be issuing $850 relief checks to roughly 858,000 of its residents. The checks, which are financed by the state’s budget surplus, will begin to be mailed in June 2022.

Maryland

Anyone in Maryland who claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit on their 2019 taxes is eligible to receive $300 stimulus checks for individuals and $500 stimulus checks for families.

Missouri

Pay attention if you work in a mental health facility, nursing home, or correctional facility (also known as a jail or prison) in Missouri and you live there. To show its appreciation for their efforts during the pandemic, the state is paying these people an additional $250 per paycheck.

New Mexico

Five million dollars will be distributed in the Land of Enchantment to those who were not eligible for the federal stimulus. New Mexicans who are in a lower income category will receive a $750 one-time payment.

New York

New York state is providing $3,200–$15,600 in one-time unemployment benefits through the Excluded Workers Fund program to workers who lost their jobs or income due to the COVID-19 pandemic but were not eligible for other forms of assistance such as stimulus payments or unemployment benefits.

Vermont

Frontline employees who served during the early months of the pandemic received checks ranging from $1,200 to $2,000 from the Vermont Frontline Employees Hazard Pay Grant Program. Workers who received checks included those in a variety of industries, including retail and grocery salespeople, janitors, and healthcare workers.

Teachers Received Their Fourth Stimulus Checks

Other states are repurposing their fourth stimulus checks as teacher bonuses! It’s no secret that educators are the unsung heroes of our society, and the pandemic has certainly tested them. Some states are providing teachers with a fourth stimulus to show them the gratitude they so richly deserve.

Florida

Teachers in Florida will receive a $1,000 bonus, though it’s unclear exactly who will be eligible. If you work as a teacher in the Sunshine State, find out if you can participate in this program by contacting your district.

Georgia

The $1,000 bonus is being extended to full-time administrators and teachers in Georgia. A $500 bonus is still in place for part-time teachers, and pre-K teachers will also receive a bonus.

Michigan

Michigan used a grant earlier in 2021 to give its teachers bonuses of $500 and its school support staff bonuses of $250. Regarding the possibility of another bonus, there is currently no word.

Tennessee

To honor their dedication, Tennessee is awarding $1,000 to full-time educators and $500 to part-time educators.

Texas

While nothing statewide has happened as of yet, certain districts in the Lone Star State are awarding bonuses of their own. To encourage certain teachers to return to the classroom, districts are offering incentives like 2-4% raises, $500 bonuses, and even $2,000 in prizes.

Which Cities Are Receiving Checks for the Fourth Stimulus?

Yes, cities are now participating in the stimulus check initiative as well (it was just a matter of time, right?). Check to see if your town was included:

Chicago

Random stimulus checks have been given to The Windy City’s low-income residents. Yes, you read correctly. Throughout 2022, Chicago will provide $500 checks to 5,000 individuals every month. For this stimulus lottery, a random selection will be made.

Los Angeles

Similar to Chicago, LA is providing annual payments to low-income citizens. Through their BIG: LEAP program, 3,200 randomly selected individuals will receive $1,000 each month.

Pittsburgh

The Assured Cash Experiment in Pittsburgh provides 200 low-income residents with $500 per month for a period of two years. $2.5 million of the program’s funding will go toward lower-income zip codes.

Santa Ana

The Revive Santa Ana Residents Stimulus Program is a stimulus program specifically designed for the immediate neighbors of Los Angeles. Six million dollars will be distributed to Santa Ana neighborhoods where the poverty line is reached. About 20,000 residents will receive $300 payments loaded onto prepaid debit cards delivered door to door.

Seattle

Seattle offers among the highest payouts on the list. Low-income Emerald City residents can receive payments ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 through the $16 million Seattle Relief Fund program.

Will the Federal Government Issue Another Stimulus Check?

Most people concur that there is currently little chance of receiving another sizable stimulus payment from the federal government. Nevertheless, some legislators aren’t done demanding more stimulus money to support Americans who are having a hard time rebuilding as a result of COVID-19 and its effects on the economy.

And would everyone experience another stimulus check now that the Delta and Omicron variants are available? You never know. Only time will tell. Many others also didn’t anticipate a third stimulus check, but one did occur.

There is far less of a need for a stimulus check now that the economy and employment are both improving than there was at the beginning of the pandemic. Not to mention that many have been receiving additional monthly payments from the Child Tax Credit. When you take everything into account, it becomes clear that there might not be another stimulus check. But don’t worry, we’ll let you know if there is one.

What Has Happened to America’s Stimulus Checks?

Since the pandemic struck, the government has issued three large stimulus checks, counting them. And we’re beginning to see how people used that money now that a sizable amount of time has passed since they distributed the first one. According to our State of Personal Finance study, recipients of stimulus checks included:

  • 41% of users used it to cover bills and other essentials like food.
  • 38% of people saved the cash.
  • Eleven percent of the money was spent on non-essential items.
  • Five percent of the money was invested.

Additionally, there is some positive news to report: Following the last two stimulus checks, food shortages decreased by 40% and financial instability decreased by 45%, according to Census Bureau data.25 That is very significant. But the real question here is, will people manage their money better to ensure that their current financial situation lasts if they are in a better one?

Take Charge of Your Finances Now Instead of Waiting for the Fourth Stimulus Check

When things are bad, having some extra cash on hand can be a breath of fresh air. However, you shouldn’t use stimulus payments as your primary source of income. We’ve said it once and we will say it again and again (as often as necessary): don’t wait for assistance from the government. It’s never a wise wager.

You’ll be waiting around for a while, to be honest. A fourth stimulus check can be beneficial, but it won’t be your lifesaver. You need to be in charge of a well-proven plan if you truly want to take financial control.

Look, you can only survive on stimulus checks for so long. However, understanding long-term financial management, saving, and budgeting will help you move from simply existing to thriving. We also know exactly how to get you there.

You’re more likely to maintain control over your spending and move closer to your financial objectives when you use EveryDollar for budgeting.
